Where We Go: Macro photography offers you the chance to make a big impact by photographing small objects. When you concentrate on the fine—and often overlooked—details of an object, you bring out its unique beauty and show it in a way most people would otherwise never see. During this workshop, you create your own environment by photographing indoors in a controlled studio-like setting to become familiar with macro techniques. Your travels for finding the perfect macro shots include the lively downtown of Missoula, Montana, the worn relics of Garnet Ghost Town and the floral beauty of a local flower nursery.
What You Learn: Experienced macro shooter Doug Johnson walks you through a variety of topics unique to close-up photography. He discusses macro equipment including lenses, light diffusers, clamps and other tools that help you set up a shot. He also addresses macro composition, exposure considerations, creative possibilities and how to incorporate flash into your shots. Alternating between indoor and outdoor locations, he is available to answer your questions one-on-one in order to help you improve your technique. During critique sessions, you learn from his spirited feedback and by looking at your images and those of your fellow participants.
Who Should Attend: Intermediate photographers comfortable with the manual exposure operation of their cameras are encouraged to attend. Film cameras are welcome, but only digital images can be critiqued.
This workshop begins Saturday at 7 p.m. and ends Friday at noon.
“Macro is an art of simplicity and this course was taught the same way—excellent instruction, excellent experience. You truly learn to be a part of the intimate beauty all around you, but so often take for granted and overlook.” – Manolo S., Tennessee
