Portrait photographer Tony Rizzuto and photojournalist Jeremy Lurgio take you to a variety of locations—potentially including the Western Montana Fair, a lunchtime festival at Missoula’s Caras Park, and a barrel-racing school in the tiny town of Arlee—to teach the techniques, etiquette, and art of capturing people on camera.

What? Throughout this week, classroom lectures and discussions, on-location field shoots, and group critiques put you on the fast track to mastering the art of photographing people. Two instructors, two styles, and two very different approaches to photographing people is what you get during this highly engaging workshop. Hearing two professionals explain how they would go about photographing the same subject is eye-opening. Rizzuto discusses using supplemental flashes, refining your composition to craft effective portraits and environmental shots, and maintaining a subject’s attention during a portrait session. Lurgio introduces methods for quickly earning a subject’s trust in the field and working nimbly with available light to tell a story through images. Heading outside, you put their words into practice by creating portraits that strive to capture the essence of your subject. Follow-up critique sessions evaluate your successes and offer tips for improvement before heading to the next location.
