She attended the Career Training program in 2011 and has worked as a Summer Intensive teaching assistant and a teacher-in-training for the past two years. She successfully completed one 365 project (take a photo a day for a year) and once made it to 155 consecutive days of making self-portraits. She is mostly known for her self-portrait work, for which she co-hosted an art show with another self-portrait artist at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography gallery in December of 2012. She prefers to take photos of people and strives to make all of her photographs evoke personal themes that echo universal feelings. She thinks in concepts and drools over good compositions. She is well-versed in Adobe® Lightroom® and Adobe® Photoshop® and enjoys image editing. She also loves to make photographs look and feel tangible, which is why she enjoys film photography. She grew up in a small town in Alaska, but now lives in Missoula with her husband, Forest and their cats Apollo and Pepé. Sarah graduated with a degree in photojournalism from the University of Montana in May of 2015.

Doug Ness http://www.rmsp.com/instructors/doug-ness/ http://www.rmsp.com/instructors/doug-ness/#comments Wed, 27 Aug 2014 18:12:30 +0000 http://www.rmsp.com/?post_type=rmsp_instructor&p=34612 Doug Ness spent 15 years working as a bond salesman in New York City and Chicago before being laid off in the midst of the 2008 financial crisis. He decided to take a break from working in the financial markets and pursue his interest in photography.  He told himself that he would follow that path as long as it felt right. Now, nearly six years later, he’s still on that path.

Doug has studied photography in Chicago, Europe, and Montana, and now teaches it, part-time. He has dedicated himself to the art of photography and the making of fine art prints. His work has won numerous awards, both in the US and abroad, has been exhibited throughout the US, and is part of numerous private collections. He is represented in Chicago by Schneider Gallery.

Forest Woodward http://www.rmsp.com/instructors/forest-woodward/ http://www.rmsp.com/instructors/forest-woodward/#comments Thu, 10 Oct 2013 18:14:06 +0000 http://beta.rmsp.com/?post_type=rmsp_instructor&p=31408 Forest Woodward lives under the influence of a man who walked into the wild. Haunted by the allure of point breaks and powder days, steep creeks and tall peaks he is a hunter-gatherer of natural light and candid moments. With an appetite whet with a taste of the unknown and the smell of home, he wanders a path paved by open minds and trusting eyes, guided by willing feet … and a desire to bring you with him. From his early days drinking fixer in the dark room, learning zone system and processing 4×5 negatives, to recent trips photographing fashion in Tokyo, surf voluntourism in Peru, a moped odyssey through Spain, rock climbing in Patagonia, or a music festival in California, his pursuit of new experiences pushes him to continually evolve his vision, while reminding him of the importance of carrying his camera with humor, compassion and curiosity.

Syl Arena http://www.rmsp.com/instructors/syl-arena/ http://www.rmsp.com/instructors/syl-arena/#comments Tue, 17 Sep 2013 19:56:33 +0000 http://beta.rmsp.com/?post_type=rmsp_instructor&p=31079 “To create interesting light, you have to create interesting shadows.”

— Syl Arena

Back when the Apollo program was headline news, Syl Arena, then a precocious eight-year old, “borrowed” his father’s new-fangled Polaroid camera, climbed up into an orange tree and made his first solo photograph – a snapshot of a baby dove. Later that year, his great-aunt gave him a Brownie 626 camera to feed his fascination. Syl’s affliction for making photographs has remained steadfast for over 40 years.

In college, Syl studied at Brooks Institute of Photography and then earned a BFA in photography at the University of Arizona. As a student, his favorite cameras spanned the gamut from 4×5 to a homemade, 20×24 pinhole. Syl mastered the zone system of black and white printing. Then, during his retro-phase, worked in a number of 19th-century media, such as cyanotypes and carbon prints.

Today, Syl travels widely to teach photography. He is the author of two best-selling books on lighting: Speedliter’s Handbook and Lighting for Digital Photography. You can see his photography at SylArena.com and read his blog at PixSylated.com.
