Where do I live?

Housing in Missoula

When a student signs up for Summer Intensive or Professional Intensive at RMSP, one of the first questions they tend to ask is, “Where do I live?”

Tips for finding housing for your RMSP education

While we do not have on-campus dorms, we always do our best to offer recommendations to our students by posting potential rentals on our private class forums and answering student housing questions as best we can.
Each student is responsible for locating their own housing in or around the Missoula area, but housing in Missoula is generally easy to find. In our 30+ years offering long-term programs, we have never had a student not find housing!

Here are some suggestions for housing for each of our programs

Students should look for a place that is comfortable and safe, which most neighborhoods in Missoula are, but they should also realize that they'll likely spend more time out shooting and in classes than they will at their apartments. Keep this in mind and adjust expectations at the outset of the housing search as this will likely allow you to save some money!

  1. A great option for lodging is Staybridge Suites Missoula, conveniently located a couple of blocks from RMSP. They offer studios, as well as one- and two-bedroom suites. If you are interested in Staybridge Suites, please contact Bob McGowan, RMSP's Admission Counselor, at bobm@rmsp.com, to be connected with the hotel sales manager.
  2. The fully-furnished options of The Sawyer Student Living and ROAM Student Living are also great for our students as they are only a short drive away from RMSP and offer unique amenities tailored toward students. The Sawyer offers a few special 6-week leases (all utilities included), and ROAM has offered short-term subleases to our "SI" students in the past.
  3. On Craigslist, we suggest students post an ad under the “Housing Wanted” category detailing who they are and what type of living space they seek. This lets potential landpersons find them and has proved fruitful for previous students.
  4. For these shorter Summer Intensive stays, we suggest students try to negotiate with the owners of Airbnbs or VRBOs, too. Often these owners will provide a much better price for a 6-week stay as opposed to their advertised nightly rates. It doesn’t hurt to ask!
  5. Some of our students may prefer to stay at RV campgrounds. In order of proximity to RMSP, check out KOA Missoula, Granite Peak RV Resort, Jim & Mary's RV Park, Outpost RV Park, and Yellowrock RV Campground (in Lolo, MT).

  • Less than a mile from RMSP, Crestview Apartments offers a selection of both furnished and unfurnished units ranging from studios to 3 beds/2 bath units that rent between $1000 to $1875/month (as of 9/2022). Attractive lease options are available — and pets are allowed.
  • Located just two miles southeast of RMSP, Copper Run Apartments offers a selection of floor plans, ranging from studios to 2 beds/2 bath units. Attractive lease options are available — and pets are allowed for an additional fee. Rent ranges from $1340 to $1718/month (as of 9/2022).
  • The fully-furnished apartments at The Sawyer Student Living and ROAM Student Living are also great options as they offer unique amenities tailored toward students, are both located in or near the heart of downtown Missoula, and are only a short drive away from RMSP. A majority of "PI" students have stayed at one of these two complexes while in school.
  • Craigslist is the other best option for searching for housing for the 9-month duration of "PI." Ads for August/September lease options usually start appearing online during the early or mid-summer months and will get snatched up quickly, so keep checking! We also suggest students consider posting an ad under the “Housing Wanted” category detailing who they are and what type of living space they seek. This lets potential landpersons find them and has proved fruitful for previous students.
