May’s Assignment – Leap of Faith
So it’s May. In the world of RMSP, this is the month we live in anticipation of the arrival of a new batch of eager Summer Intensive students in June. These students arrive in Missoula, Montana from all over North America and the globe, with some having never set foot in our part of the country before. As you can imagine, this represents quite a journey for each one of them. It also represents a chance to start a new life by being immersed in a subject they are passionate about – photography. Making the decision to register for SI requires an immense amount of courage and determination. After all, it’s never easy to put one’s life on hold for three to five months and move to Montana. We commonly refer to this as a “leap of faith” on their part.
Well, therein lies the subject for May’s assignment: Leap Of Faith.
What is your own personal leap of faith? Is it simply picking up your camera and trusting your instincts to capture an amazing image – that feeling of no fear? Is it leaving your home for a new experience, searching for a new job or asking “that special someone” out to dinner for the first time? Or heck, is it getting married? Is your leap of faith simply trusting that it’s gonna be a good day fishing, golfing, running, riding, skiing, climbing, walking, painting, writing, flying…or living? What is it that makes you trust the universe to show up for you in certain circumstances? Maybe it’s your own children in the act of their antics, grandchildren whom you love to spoil, or the action and emotion provided by athletic competition.
Literally or figuratively, we want to see your representation of leaping into the void. The place that you know sustains you, yet you sometimes cannot physically see, but sure can feel. Yes, this may be a unique concept to grasp – especially with a camera – and it’s not without some level of risk…and reward. We also realize it may be one of the more challenging assignments we’ve put forth to you yet. This isn’t really about technique or composition, it’s all about feel. But, you know what? We have every FAITH in the world that you’ll JUMP all over this challenge and come through with flying colors!
Please send all submissions to email@example.com. As with last month’s assignment, we’ll ask you again to please send no more than three images.
