My Nights With the Lensbabies

I’m very excited to announce that Lensbaby has come on board to support my upcoming workshop with Tim Cooper and RMSP called Vegas to Zion: Dusk to Dawn. I’ve been a big fan of Lensbaby since the original baby, back in 2004.

Why you might ask?

Because it offers you a different way of seeing.

At the heart of the Lensbaby system is a lens for your SLR camera that creates a selective sweet spot of focus.  You can put that sweet spot anywhere in the scene and turn distracting backgrounds into out-of-focus bliss.  They have been incredibly popular, and if you are ever in a photography funk, pop a Lensbaby on your camera and take it for a walk.  As you stroll down the street you will be inspired by the visions the “baby” will show you.

For me, the Lensbaby has been a big part of my work during the day and night.  In fact the image above was one of the inspirations for offering this class.  For the last 10 years I have been traveling to Las Vegas for work.  The bright lights of the City of Sin were very inspiring at the beginning but after a while the newness wore off.  However, that all changed recently when I decided to bring my Lensbaby Composer on a night shoot through Vegas’ Old Town. The neon lights bent at my will – in and out of focus! Discs of light shot into the frame! And the visions exploded before my eyes!

Most people love the lensbabies because of their selective focus and the way it blurs the focus.  However at night you can turn a light source into these very pleasing disks of light – drawing you into the main point of focus.

I personally think everyone should have a Lensbaby or at least try one for a while.  Like any good tool you must learn to control it instead of it controlling you…and now’s your chance! Graciously, Lensbaby has agreed to provide all the lucky attendees of our Dusk to Dawn workshop with loaner Composers to use during the workshop!  Each participant will be given the opportunity to experiment with their own Lensbaby during the day and night.  By the end of the week you’ll have better control of this new way of seeing.

But wait, there’s more!

At the end of the workshop, one lucky workshop participant will take home a Lensbaby Composer Pro! The winning participant will be chosen by Tim and myself, based on the images they create with the Lensbaby over the course of the week.

No other lens or accessory challenges you to push the visions along. So come join us for nights of neon, Zion, and plenty of inspiration!
