January’s Assignment – Critters

Now who doesn’t love animals?! You don’t, you say? Then why not go shoot some. This may seem like an antagonistic way to introduce an assignment, but please “bear” with us. Okay, so you have a camera and you don’t hate animals. Let’s see what you can do about capturing them…live. The assignment for January is “Critters.” We want to see animals…in their natural state. Do we mean snapshots of Brutus, your great dane as he lounges on the laps of the entire family on the living room couch? Sure! Do we mean scenes of ferocious panting leopards up in a tree in the Serengeti Desert? Yep. Your pet tarantula, Fang as she crawls on Cousin Billie’s shoulder? Why not? All critters are fair game.

Whether it walks, cuddles, purrs, climbs, slithers, flies or swims, we’re interested.  While photographing, think about unique ways to represent living creatures. Paws, bellies, eyes, wings, feathers, hooves, teeth, tails and fins themselves all make great subject matter that can allude to the essence of an animal.  Think metaphorically, if you like. Do they travel in packs? Do they have mating rituals? What exactly differentiates humans from everything else living on Planet Earth? The movie National Lampoon’s Animal House, the book  Animal Farm by George Orwell, the rock concept album Animals by Pink Floyd – all of these are examinations of the human condition within the animal framework. Can you bring a little different perspective to the “critter” motif to represent a little slice of humanity? Or not. If animals are simply your thing, then simply show us your passion. And to emphasize – we mean shooting with a CAMERA!
