Dean Petterson — Washington
Course: Basic Photography
Over the past 10 years I have taken thousands of photos in "automatic" mode, occasionally getting
the "good shot," but never fully under my own control. I wanted to become a better photographer
and I wanted to better understand how to fully use the features of my camera. I wanted to take
control and get way from "auto." I first learned about RMSP from an advertisement in the B&H catalog.
I have looked at various classes over the years, but decided that I should really start with a good
foundation. I decided the week long Basic Photography class offered in Missoula, Montana was the
place to start my journey to being a better photographer. The Basic Photography class brought it
all together for me. Since the class, I have stepped away from the "Automatic" mode and have been
gaining more and more experience and confidence daily with the "manual" settings. The class was a
game changer for me. Doug and Jen were knowledgeable and were able to communicate to each of us
with each of our different learning styles.
I have always loved the stories that photographs can tell. I look forward to the stories yet to be
told. The week introduced me to new and hopefully life-long friendships. I look forward to learning
from my new friends and sharing our experiences.
