Where We Go: As a photographer of people, building a good rapport with your subject influences the quality of your images as much as possessing a working knowledge of your equipment. This workshop gives you the rare opportunity to learn the fine art of photographing people from the perspective of both a photojournalist and a studio photographer. During the week you shoot on location at the Western Montana Fair, at a citywide lunch-time gathering at Caras Park and on the streets of downtown Missoula.
What You Learn: Learning from photographers of different disciplines makes you a more informed, more experienced photographer. During classroom lectures, Tony and Jeremy cover topics including techniques for creating intimate portraits, qualities of light and using fill-flash to make your subject stand out. While emphasizing the importance of developing a personal approach and making your subject feel comfortable, the similarities and differences in how each instructor approaches his subject may surprise you. During field assignments you test out your own approach while having Tony and Jeremy available to answer your questions. Critique sessions provide constructive feedback and allow you to learn from the successes as well as the challenges of fellow participants.
Who Should Attend: You should be comfortable with the manual exposure operation of your camera. Film cameras are welcome, however only digital images can be critiqued.
This workshop begins Saturday at 7 p.m. and ends Friday at noon.
“I came to Rocky Mountain School of Photography for a crash course in people photography—as an aspiring journalist, I needed skills related to approaching and evaluating subjects and settings. I am more than satisfied with the results.”
