The difference between the average outdoor photographer and the professional lies in what each sees when looking through the viewfinder. Amateurs see the animal staring back at them or the magnificent waterfall in front of them. Professional outdoor photographers, however, see a magazine cover, calendar sales, a series of greeting cards, royalties from stock sales and revenue from the sale of limited edition prints. With more than 25 years experience as an outdoor photographer, Darrell Gulin teaches you what it takes to create and sustain a career in this competitive niche.

You are most likely drawn to outdoor photography because you enjoy being outside or feel a strong attraction to wildlife, the land and the beauty found in the natural world. If so, then you have already made an important first step, according to Darrell. Recognizing what it is you are interested in—what you are passionate about—is crucial to finding success in photography.  In classroom lectures spread throughout the week, Darrell lectures on topics including advanced landscape techniques, the difference between creating good vs. great images, approaching wildlife in the field and equipment considerations for the outdoor photographer. He addresses business and marketing topics including self-publishing, running a business and attracting clients. Throughout the week, you visit locations around Missoula in order to create images of wildlife and outdoor scenes.
